Curiosity killed the cat, but my curiosity made me a researcher.

During this semester I learned many things, and they are practical which is much helpful than theoretical. You can know everything in theory perfectly, however when you want to use it in practice you meet several of challenges.

There are some essential things that I gained during this semester; they are writing blogs, methodology, how to avoid plagiarism, some experience in writing literature review which was not so successful if to speak honestly my attempt wasn’t successful.

However, I will try to share some of my experience in full thesis writing.

Before starting to write your thesis, you should definitely need to find your problem statement, then you need to find as much as possible relevant literature to write a good literature review. You need to structure your central questions and sub-questions to answer your research question.

I have met many challenges like: out of order access to university online library when I wanted to look for some literature to include into my thesis, then reading all those piles of e-books to get necessary ideas that will help to answer my thesis question. The last one is to understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative methods, their tool, benefits and disadvantages. Also I faced many problems with data collection strategies, methods and their interpretation. Finding, doing transcribe to every interview, coding them was also not an easy thing. I can continue my long list about challenges I met and I will meet during my thesis writing but it is better to stop here and to give some advices to online learning students. To my mind, the first you need to love what you are doing, and it shouldn’t be like a punishment to you. If it is a punishment for you, you need to change your attitude toward the thing that is obligatory. Just pretend that they will pay you money for this work (in reality they do pay), next you should always remember that it wouldn’t last forever.

If I were the instructor of this course I would ask my students to divide into groups and to write them a real thesis using qualitative, quantitative and mixed method to get them more practice in submitting the main assignment of university.

I would like to devote this post to data collection of my mini-thesis “There is a lack of online private tutoring in a southern part of Kazakhstan” I have never taken an interview from someone, but I had an experience of being interviewed during my life twice. I felt myself uncomfortable in both cases for the reason it was taken outside in the street; what’s more I wasn’t ready for this interview. I was simply stopping to answer the questions. It was noisy outside, and the people were walking and staring at you. I tried to learn from other people’s mistakes in my actual interview in order to avoid them.

The first thing I decided to look for the websites on the Internet to find some teachers who have some experience of teaching English language online. Then I contacted the manager of the tutoring center to ask permission from the gatekeeper to conduct the research with teachers in their staff. When I got an official permission from the gatekeeper, I asked about the right time and place for the interviewees.

I remember myself inconvenient situation when you are interviewed without any negotiation in advance, and this was the main reason to contact with the participants. The interviewee agreed to have an interview in order to resolve my questions of the mini – thesis. The next measure was the preparation of the semi-structured open –ended questions to answer my research questions. This type of questions helps to get more unexpected variants of answers and it helps to get the answer of the person who have deeper knowledge and understanding in that sphere.
I went to have an interview in their position as the interviewees considered this place and time appropriate to them. I asked all the participants to read the consent form, and sign if they checked the interview to be audio recorded. However, I felt myself a little bit uncomfortable, as it was the first time I visited them and the interviewees were complete strangers. I realized that during the research we usually worry more about the state about the interviewee but not the interviewer unfortunately.

In conclusion, I would like to write that all the data from the interview I included in my mini-thesis. This interview results were helpful to come to a final conclusion about my research.

Life before the computer, prezi and ebeam ….

However, we have life after computer..

Good day, dear all! I would like to start my blog with the quotation by Norman Ralph Augustine “one of the feared expression in modern times is – the computer is down» by this expression you can understand that I will write about innovative technologies in class and their advantages.

As usual teacher knows that using cell phones are the real disaster, because students start searching something else, or they can start chatting with their peers. Sometimes computers distract learners from their learning process due to the fact that the Internet is full of attractive websites.

I found some videos on YouTube website that grabbed my attention. Before discussing any new innovations, I would like to discuss some obstacles of bringing new technologies to school.

The title is “To bring technology to school”.

There is a bright example of high tech prohibition in schools. The students raise the problem of an old-fashioned style of teaching, and they do not want to continue taking notes in their notebooks anymore. They want to be updated, to download documents, to share homework via the website, and to send all documents in some seconds. There are many schools, which have the strict rules of bringing any piece of electronic technology due to the danger of being stolen or broken inside the school.

The video promotes school rules of how to make using electronic devices legally at school. This is a nice idea, and I think we should start by changing rules how to use techniques at school. Afterwards, the students will be able to use all electronic devices without any problems and teachers will benefit more. Following these students’ devices will be strictly checked up by IT specialist; as a result, some new software will be installed in order to block unwilling websites to use during the school or lessons. These measures will help students to concentrate more on their studies, moreover teachers will be sure that their students work on something very important but not just entertain themselves.

The next videos are about prezi and eBeam, I find these two innovations very impressive. These two innovative ideas always help to have very interactive lessons. I first learned how to use Prezi in 2013 when I was studying PDP in Nazarbayev University, only then I realized that my lessons and especially presentations were miserable before.

As you see in the video that the presentation with prezi is very dynamic. You can insert a video, media, picture or table; whatever you want. However you need time to learn how to use it.   The next item is unique for me, as I bought it myself in 2013. There is a promotion video about its features;

What is your first emotion?

Yes, I had the same exciting and unbelievable thoughts. This is portable device to carry anywhere you want, you do not depend on one classroom with smart board as you have your own smart board. You are able to use it even on the wall, however you need a computer to work with it. Additionally, imagine yourself you have this smart device, and you have good skills of presentation with prezi, as a result your lesson is perfect; all your students are excited, so they are not bored during the lesson.

We cannot imagine our life without computers now; also we think that lessons without any computer device are boring. Nevertheless, a computer has one drawback as it can be crushed; besides you have the threat to lose all your documents and necessary information.

The last point I wuold like to share a picture with deep meaning:

Literature review challenge

images-5Literature review challenge …

Frankly speaking I would like to say that I am grateful to our instructor who gave great opportunity to share our ideas and they are transparent to everyone, this is great for those who hesitate about how to accomplish the task. You are able to read and comprehend the given assignment well. I understand that most of our group mates didn’t have any idea about the meaning of literature review.

My experience: when I tried to write review to the literature during our first part of research proposal, I realized some of our professors have thoughts that we have to know about it. However most of us have never met such experience before especially me. The time when I started writing the assignment which included literature review writing, some of people in our group did it in the form of table, which was good, some of them wrote long sentences that included quotes, phrases, and names of the authors that they used. I started my own investigation about the topic of this assignment; as a result I found some examples and did my task according to the example. Unfortunately the person who checked my work told that it is not literature review but it is an annotation. I was given feedback and I started working on it as I was guided. As the time past I can understand that it is analysis of all books, publications, articles and proposal, they must be credible it means you cannot just take any text or article you like. You need to read many articles related to your research theme, highlight some concepts and try to find them in the books you have found and make analysis or summary to them. All understanding came after some practice and it is possible to submit if you make it on time and read more. Anyway it is still difficult for me to write literature reviews, which include many ideas and information from many sources. I hope we will succeed in submission.

My question to my colleagues: What kind of free credible websites and sources do you know? Can you share with me?

Citation machines that make our life easier………

Good morning dear my colleagues.  This is the right theme that I wanted to discuss or get more information passionately as you can realize this is the most important issue for anyone who studies at university.   Citation, paraphrasing, formatting writing a reference is a big deal for me personally. I first had an experience with APA citation style when I entered Nazarbayev University in August 2014. I didn’t have any idea about anything how to cite or even what is it.(I felt myself like a fish leaf out on the sandy beach) For me it was just letters, dates, commas, dots and commas again. I noticed that some of my group mates have a good command of using APA citation. I thought that it is not so important however when I was warned about plagiarism and the using of right citation format I decided to look through the internet myself and learn the things that I didn’t know about this method.  Every student who wants to make a research or write any report using somebody’s article, book, or phrases should realize that he needs to cite and tell or show where the information comes from; the source is shown in the reference list as a rule. There are some citation styles like APA, MLA etc. every educational institution demand to use one of this styles.

There is also a rule of formatting of citation, even a bracket, a comma or inverted commas are valuable as you may be asked to re-do your work of citation. During my long journey along with the rules of citation I have found many useful web sites, videos, and citation machines. The first one that I recommend is www.purdueowl.com  , this web site is great as the language that they explain how to use is easy to understand. I also watched some official videos on www.youtube.com and the best citation machine  where you just enter the necessary information that you have and it will help you to cite properly : http://www.citationmachine.net/apa/  and  http://www.citefast.com/

I can honestly say that I am not so perfect and professional in using APA style, exactly I have a problem with in-text-citation before every reference writing I always look back to do it correctly. I hope that my post and some web sites that I advised would be helpful. Thank you for attention and  the time you spend on reading and commenting my blog.

TO E-LEARN OR NOT TO E-LEARN?

online learning

To e-learn or not to e-learn ?

Before I start discussion about online learning, its good or bad sides, I will highlight great investment of the Internet to online learning. Without the Internet it will be impossible in whole. Many years ago people couldn’t even imagine themselves that it is possible to study not participating university or teachers. Most of them thought it is impossible because they got used to usual style of learning. It means they think that you can get education only if you go, attend and participate institution or lessons. Anyway as you know it is possible to study anywhere and anytime, our group and university is the best example of successful fulfillment of such educational program. The trend of online learning has started being very popular very recently. These kinds of study become fashionable and demanding due to internalization of all sphere of education.   There are many different advantages and disadvantages of online learning. According to Young (2013) there are three types of learning: face to face, it is usual classes where a teacher stands and have lectures in classes, the next is hybrid –is when classes are mixed, partly online and partly face to face when students attend university two or three times a year 25-50 % of all course is holding online, and the last is online which is primarily or entirely online, students number is restricted to 45 or less.

Strengths: Some articles and their authors outlined strong points of online learning but they didn’t identified what exactly type of learning it is. The best advantage is that you are able to use it anywhere and anytime, it doesn’t matter who are you, most universities accept students of all ages. You can work and study easily without leaving your workplace or home. A student will have access to many online resources that are available on university e-library. Online learning method is student centered and level played; it is good opportunity to choose or to select the course according to your knowledge level.

Weakness: There were some highlighted drawback of online learning, Brandstorm (2011) wrote that the vast majority of children and their parents who will be involved in online learning should be aware about a lot porno or prohibited websites, those children can be contacted by pedophiles in case their parents will control all chats which their children usually have while they are using the Internet.

Some other drawback is that you must have good computer knowledge, Internet access, and the computer itself. You will meet some limitation as accessibility to the professor staff, you do not have opportunity to go and talk to them in the room as you are in another city or country, all you have to do is email them your question and wait for an answer. It is self-directed study when you are sent instruction and you have to do them yourself without any example sometimes or having opportunity attend lectures first   and them do the assignment in practice. Also high rate of cheating, when teachers do not see is the assignment is done by the students itself. According to Brandstorm (2011) “technical problems on websites or Moodle’s are on the top” of disadvantages of online learning.

In conclusion, most authors gave their own vision on to do online learning or not to do, they gave arguments from both perspective and every person who decided to do online learning will weight the both side arguments to choose the best variant.

Why is it a surge of private tutoring centers in Shymkent in the last five years?

This is my first blog post about my thesis writing, I really hope it will be successful and interesting . My thesis question is about currently spread agenda – private tutoring. The question I would like to explore is: Why is there a surge in private tutoring section in Shymkent in last 5 years? The main reason is that I work closely in this sector and I think I came here after I was dissatisfied with the curriculum and top down reforms at mainstream schools. When I started working in the sector of private tutoring there were only some private tutoring centers. However, there is a trend of spreading such centers.

There is a dilemma about people’s attitude to the private tutoring center, some people think it is “shadow education”, and teachers work less at their main work to attract more students after lesson to have private lessons to get more money. It is obvious that teachers get little salary and this fact pushes them to have private lessons for money. Magda Nutsa (2014), indicates that:

All teacher-provided tutoring constitutes a form of corruption. It also does not suggest that teachers tutoring their students, for whom they are already responsible in public schools, are all corrupt (p.455).

Some people think that schools cannot give appropriate education for their children and parents are ready to pay any sum of money to give their children that unique opportunity to be better than others in education and have more chance to enter prestigious university. Such parents think that if they pay it means their children will definitely pursue their dream about bright future. Also some parents see that their children are not doing well at school and their marks are not so satisfied, this is also the reason why parents want their children to get additional help from tutors. For some parents the marks at school are more important than knowledge and they chase standardization of having documents with successful marks. There are many reasons of a surge of private tutoring center. This is my aim to identify most common reasons of this trend in Shymkent in the last 5 years.
