TO E-LEARN OR NOT TO E-LEARN?

To e-learn or not to e-learn ?

Before I start discussion about online learning, its good or bad sides, I will highlight great investment of the Internet to online learning. Without the Internet it will be impossible in whole. Many years ago people couldn’t even imagine themselves that it is possible to study not participating university or teachers. Most of them thought it is impossible because they got used to usual style of learning. It means they think that you can get education only if you go, attend and participate institution or lessons. Anyway as you know it is possible to study anywhere and anytime, our group and university is the best example of successful fulfillment of such educational program. The trend of online learning has started being very popular very recently. These kinds of study become fashionable and demanding due to internalization of all sphere of education.   There are many different advantages and disadvantages of online learning. According to Young (2013) there are three types of learning: face to face, it is usual classes where a teacher stands and have lectures in classes, the next is hybrid –is when classes are mixed, partly online and partly face to face when students attend university two or three times a year 25-50 % of all course is holding online, and the last is online which is primarily or entirely online, students number is restricted to 45 or less.

Strengths: Some articles and their authors outlined strong points of online learning but they didn’t identified what exactly type of learning it is. The best advantage is that you are able to use it anywhere and anytime, it doesn’t matter who are you, most universities accept students of all ages. You can work and study easily without leaving your workplace or home. A student will have access to many online resources that are available on university e-library. Online learning method is student centered and level played; it is good opportunity to choose or to select the course according to your knowledge level.

Weakness: There were some highlighted drawback of online learning, Brandstorm (2011) wrote that the vast majority of children and their parents who will be involved in online learning should be aware about a lot porno or prohibited websites, those children can be contacted by pedophiles in case their parents will control all chats which their children usually have while they are using the Internet.

Some other drawback is that you must have good computer knowledge, Internet access, and the computer itself. You will meet some limitation as accessibility to the professor staff, you do not have opportunity to go and talk to them in the room as you are in another city or country, all you have to do is email them your question and wait for an answer. It is self-directed study when you are sent instruction and you have to do them yourself without any example sometimes or having opportunity attend lectures first   and them do the assignment in practice. Also high rate of cheating, when teachers do not see is the assignment is done by the students itself. According to Brandstorm (2011) “technical problems on websites or Moodle’s are on the top” of disadvantages of online learning.

In conclusion, most authors gave their own vision on to do online learning or not to do, they gave arguments from both perspective and every person who decided to do online learning will weight the both side arguments to choose the best variant.

  1. Dear Akzharkyn,

I agree that online learning provides access to education anywhere and at any time. This kind of education has become extremely popular in most prestigious universities resulting in the possibility for students to get Master’s degree by studying via online. As you mentioned, online learning provides students with a choice of cources due to their interests and skills, however not always we as students are given freedom in choosing the content and pace of learning. As we are somehow online students, we are offered the same course whithout differentiation, thus I consider this issue as a main disadvantage of online learning.
Could you share your experience of studying online?

    1. Dear Bota, thank you for your comment. As I wrote above e-learning is divided into some categories, our category is Hybrid learning when we have chance to meet with our group mates two or three times a year, see our professors in person. My experience is hard as we have lots of tasks and you are far away and you have to cope with it yourself. Sometimes when I submit assignment I am not sure about the quality of it.

  2. Dear Akzharkyn

Thanks for sharing this knowledge with us. Reading your article reminded me my school years, when we were totally under the control of our teachers and even homeworks were strictly done under the control of our tutor. Although I am against of such strictness, I can not fully agree on leaving the education on machines. Personally, I can not compare talking to a professor to talking to a computer.
However, online learning helps to limit the amount of resources. That could be another topic that will play for the benefit of online learning. Probably you could also become interested in this?

    1. Dear Laura, I didn’t write that only machines will educate us , there are also teachers I mean human being at another side of the screen. E-learning and computer technologies are just an link between teacher and a students who is usually far away from the university. I didn’t understand about the resources limitation that you asked. How can online learning help to limit the amount of resources?

  3. Dear Akzharkyn,

I’d like to share my ideas about e-learning. I am afraid that the question in the topic of your post is not quite adequate.I claim that e-learning is the demand of our time. As computer- technologies develop every day they should be used in the teaching process.

It’s out of the question that e-learning will be the predominant type of learning in the nearest future. The only issue about it is that educators should develop strategies of e-teaching in order to minimize or delete its disadvantages.

It is quite clear that educators need government support in this sphere because there are some which might be done on the national level (make changes to the laws, school curriculum, financial issues, etc).

I would like to know your point of view about the situation with e-learning in our country. Thank You!

  4. Thanks, Akzharkyn. I appreciate your personal writing voice which is natural and easy to understand. You found two great articles and did a nice job discussing them in a mixture of summaries, paraphrases and quotations.

I want you to keep working on grammar and sentence structure:
    1) “According to Young (2013) there are three types of learning: face to face, it is usual classes where a teacher stands and have lectures in classes, the next is hybrid –is when classes are mixed, partly online and partly face to face when students attend university two or three times a year 25-50 % of all course is holding online, and the last is online which is primarily or entirely online, students number is restricted to 45 or less.” This is a rambling, unclear sentence that needs to be broken into a clearer list format, or use semi-colons to divide into clearer chunks.
    2) weight vs. weigh; discussion vs. discussing
    3) There were some other drawback (S-V)
    4) Some other drawback is… (Another)
