Action research in teachers’ professional development

One of the most struggling first year issues for me was managing my time. Last year was full of new events and changes in my professional career, I was promoted for the new position which required more than half of my job time. So, little time was dedicated for writing weekly assignments. A few have been changed this year, however the understanding of the essence of writing a successful piece of paper – a thesis is outmatching other priorities..

The topic of the thesis is “Action research in Kazakhstani secondary schools: challenges of implementation”. Being a Teacher research coordinator in one of the Kazakhstani schools I worked with a lot of teachers who were conducting action research. Most of the teachers are participants of various action research workshops and seminars. However, the effectiveness and reliability of teacher research findings were not discussed and measured. Also, not all of the teachers who took part in the workshops could conduct action research in their schools. While talking to teachers, some issues dealt with teacher research conducting and implementation were found and discussed. Consequently, this thesis topic was occurred. Reading and analyzing different literature on the topic, majority of the issues which were identified by teachers were found in some authors’ works (Zhou, 2013; Mingucci, 2001; Megowan-Romanowicz, 2010). However, action research implementation challenges in Kazakhstani schools were not discussed yet.

The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify the challenges of action research implementation in teachers’ professional development in one of the Kazakhstani secondary schools.

The findings of the study will be useful for administrators, teachers, and students of one of the Kazakhstani schools, as well as for other educational organisations. Teachers and managers should be familiar with the action research implementation challenges. Also, as a Teacher Research Coordinator, I can help promote the culture of conducting action research within the school community.

  1. I would definitely agree with you about the significance of your research topic. Action research is actually reasearch that any teacher conducts in his classroom, and mostly teachers are not aware of it. Once teachers will be engaged into the journey of action research with an intention to find solution to his problem or challenge, moreover if a teacher will follow all steps of action research, record it and share with colleagues, then teachers may become more satisfied with their job. But it not so easy to attract teachers to practice AR, literature suggests some challenges that hinder the practice of AR, it would be very interesting to know what are the challenges Kazakhstani teachers face while conducting AR.

  2. Dear Gulzina,

I can say that Action Research take an important place at NIS schools. It really motivates teachers make some action and changes in terms of teacher professional development and other aspects of improvement. Moreover, it is useful for students who are actively participate in that type of research. I have observed some of the lessons where teachers tried to apply of the new technology in the class and I can defiantly say that it was amazing lesson where all participants stayed really happy after the lesson.
Moreover, it motivated me to conduct my own Action Research where I would like to investigate how through develop of students leadership skill improve their performance. That is why I wish you good luck with your thesis that is fantastic topic.

  3. Dear Gulzina,

Your thesis topic seems well-defined, and your paragraphs are well-organized. You show good command of APA referencing.

I noticed a few grammar issues that you should address. Be careful not to overuse passive voice. It often leads to grammatical errors and awkward, confusing sentences. Here are three examples of what I mean:

    1) While talking to teachers, some issues dealt with teacher research conducting and implementation were found and discussed.
Gulzina, this passive sentence is not clear to me. You start the sentence with a phrase, but it is not followed with the subject of the sentence. (The issues didn’t talk to the teachers.) I would revise it this way:
While talking to teachers, I found and discussed some issues of conducting research and implementing the findings. (Is this what you mean?)

    2) Consequently, this thesis topic was occurred.
Gulzina, the verb “to occur” can never be passive. So I don’t understand the sentence.

    3) Reading and analyzing different literature on the topic, majority of the issues which were identified by teachers were found in some authors’ works.
Gulzina, again you begin a sentence with a phrase and don’t follow it with the subject. In your sentence, WHO read and analyzed the lit? Do you mean: Reading and analyzing different pieces of literature on the topic, the teachers were able to identify the majority of the issues.

I would like you to google or consult a grammar text about “dangling modifiers” as well as the correct use of passive voice.

Here is another grammar error. You write: Last year was full of new events and changes in my professional career, I was promoted for the new position which required more than half of my job time. You have a comma where you need a full stop (period). This error is called a “comma splice” or run-on. This is another thing I would like you to review.
